Population Connection Action Fund announced today that it has endorsed Abigail Spanberger for Congress from Virginia’s 7th District.
Brian Dixon, the Senior Vice President said, “Ms. Spanberger has made clear that she recognizes that access to comprehensive reproductive health isn’t a luxury, it’s critical to expanding opportunity and economic security for people in Virginia, across the United States and around the world. She offers a startling contrast to the incumbent, Dave Brat.”
Spanberger says, “There is no doubt that increasing access to family planning and reproductive health programs is an economic issue for many families. The ability to prevent or delay pregnancy opens up new opportunities for vulnerable people in the developing world – just like it does for women and families in Central Virginia. Congressman Brat’s support of attacks on family planning access is harmful to women and families worldwide. I’m committed to fighting to repeal the Global Gag Rule, restore aid to UNFPA and oppose any new efforts to undermine women’s health care anywhere.”
Brat has been a consistent enabler Donald Trump’s agenda of casual cruelty. He supported the imposition of the disgraceful Global Gag Rule, cutting off access to critical health care to people throughout the developing world. He joined in Trump’s effort to strip health care coverage from vulnerable Americans and deny care to people who rely on Planned Parenthood clinics across our country. He joined in as Trump eliminated aid to UNFPA – an agency providing access to birth control and other important services to struggling families in 150 countries, including providing maternal health care to Syrian refugees in Jordan.
Dixon added, “it is long past time for Congress to stand up to this shortsighted, misguided cruelty. It is time for Congress to stand up for the victims of human rights violations, not the violators. It is time for Congress to stand up for the rights of all people to choose their own futures.
Abigail Spanberger has made clear that she will stand up and fight for health, empowerment and rights for people everywhere. We are proud to stand with her.”
