Population Connection Action Fund announced its endorsement of Scott Wallace for the U.S. Congress from Pennsylvania’s 1st District.

John Seager, the president of Population Connection Action Fund said, “Scott Wallace has dedicated his life to promoting and defending women’s rights and the environment. He has spent his adult life working to expand access to family planning and reproductive health to people throughout the developing world. That’s exactly the kind of dedication we need in Congress. And he offers the best opportunity to replace Brian Fitzpatrick – who has enabled the Trump administration to dismantle American leadership on global health and women’s empowerment.”

“It’s exceedingly rare that a first time candidate has the depth of knowledge and demonstrated commitment to international reproductive health and women’s rights that Wallace does,” Seager added.

Wallace said, “The goal of ensuring that every woman can make her own decisions about her reproductive life is as crucial to me as it was to my parents, who devoted many decades of their lives to Population Action International, Planned Parenthood, and our family foundation, the Wallace Global Fund. I have been proud to continue their work for the last 15 years, including supporting robust family planning resources through US AID and UNFPA, as well as economic empowerment of women worldwide, and fighting harmful traditional practices like FGM (female genital mutilation) and child marriage. I am committed to continuing this work in Congress and to opposing any efforts to undermine family planning and reproductive health care anywhere in the world.”

Brian Fitzpatrick has consistently enabled Donald Trump’s agenda of casual cruelty. Fitzpatrick supported Trump as he imposed the disgraceful Global Gag Rule, cutting off access to critical health care to people throughout the developing world. He supported Trump as he eliminated aid to UNFPA – an agency providing access to birth control and other important services to struggling families in 150 countries, including providing maternal health care to Syrian refugees in Jordan.

“It’s time for Congress to stand up to this shortsighted, misguided cruelty. It’s time for Congress to stand up for the victims of human rights violations, not the violators. It’s time for Congress to stand up for the rights of all people to choose their own futures. Scott Wallace has it made clear that he will be a leader in Congress from Day One in the fight for health, empowerment and rights for people everywhere. We are proud to stand with him,” said Seager.
