Aurora Celebrates Pride and Calls Out Cory Gardner

By Liz Hart

Home to over 325,000 citizens, Aurora, CO has long awaited a Pride festival for its LGBTQI+ citizens and allies to celebrate their community’s diverse and inclusive population. On August 5th, the Out Front Foundation delivered and held the very first Aurora Pride!  Aurora’s progressives had the opportunity to learn about different organizations and causes, including Population Connection Action Fund’s #Fight4HER campaign, and how they as constituents can advocate for progressive values.

The #Fight4HER campaign spent the day collecting written petitions urging Sen. Cory Gardner to support the Global HER Act, which would repeal the Global Gag Rule. Many people that stopped by were already aware of the Global Gag Rule and the grave situation it creates for global healthcare. Those that did not know were eager to educate themselves and to be a part of the solution.

In addition to written petitions, Aurorans photo petitioned Sen. Gardner asking him to stand up for health, empowerment, and rights for all. Sen. Gardner spent over a year dodging his constituents by refusing to hold in-person town halls. His constituents were more than happy to take this opportunity to remind Sen. Gardner that he represents THEM—and that his consistent votes against their wishes have not gone unnoticed.

By the end of the day, we collected 107 petitions and 45 photo petitions tweeted directly at Sen. Gardner. It was inspiring to see so many informed and involved citizens of Aurora step up to aid in the fight for global access to vital reproductive healthcare, lending a strong voice to people around the world most affected by the Global Gag Rule.
