The 2019 Summer of HER: Education and Action for Reproductive Rights

Lauren Salmiery, National Field Director

Last summer, Population Connection Action Fund and #Fight4HER launched the first annual Summer of HER (Health, Empowerment, and Rights) in 10 cities across the country. After training dozens of activists and turning out over 400 community members for Summits in 2018, #Fight4HER is ready to make an even bigger impact in 2019.

In the last year, we have seen the number of policies restricting reproductive health and rights skyrocket. So-called “fetal heartbeat bills” have passed in a number of states, prohibiting safe abortion after a “heartbeat” is detected—as early as six weeks into pregnancy, and before many individuals even know they’re pregnant. The Trump administration bullied the United Nations into removing language regarding access to reproductive health services from a resolution meant to condemn sexual violence as a weapon of war. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced a further expansion of the Global Gag Rule, which has already put the lives of women around the world in serious danger. Our fearless #Fight4HER team is ready to face elected officials and address these attacks on reproductive freedom.

The Summer of HER Activist Institute will take place over a span of 10 weeks, with a focus on education and action supporting reproductive rights. By providing classroom workshops and field trainings on a variety of organizing techniques, #Fight4HER aims to provide activists with the skills they need to make a difference in their communities. At the end of the summer, trainees, community members, and volunteers from the 10 cities where we’re working will convene for an advocacy summit to discuss ways to organize in defense of reproductive health, rights, and justice.

As we embark on a summer of education and activism, we will keep the driving force of our work centered on passing the Global HER (Health, Empowerment, and Rights) Act, which would end the Global Gag Rule and help protect the reproductive health of people around the world. Through our activism, our energy, and our partnerships, we will win the #Fight4HER!
