The anti-choice movement is ramping up its war on reproductive freedom. Last week, Alabama passed a total ban on abortion, with no exceptions for rape or incest. Abortion providers who perform the procedure could be punished with up to 99 years in prison.
Alabama’s law is part of a wave of extreme anti-abortion laws sweeping the country. This month, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, who narrowly won his seat amidst accusations of voter suppression, signed a six-week abortion ban. Mississippi and Ohio enacted similar six-week abortion bans earlier this year. In Kentucky, anti-choice lawmakers passed four bills banning and severely restricting abortion access, including a six-week ban, a requirement that providers give medically inaccurate information about abortion to patients, and a trigger law to ban abortion outright if Roe v. Wade is ever overturned.
These anti-choice demagogues have one common goal: to control the reproductive futures of people who can get pregnant, including women, trans men, and nonbinary folks. They have long desired to overturn Roe v. Wade, and they reject reproductive freedom in the United States. Now, for the first time in decades, with Trump-appointed cronies sitting on the bench of the highest court in the country, this is a real possibility.
We have the facts on our side. The majority of Americans support legal abortion in the United States. The medical community agrees that abortion is a safe procedure that should be available to pregnant people when making a decision about their pregnancy. Criminalizing abortion would cause devastating health consequences across the country by forcing people to seek unsafe abortions. This strategy is anything but “pro-life”: Unsafe abortion causes between 22,800 and 31,000 maternal deaths each year.
But unfortunately, in an era when our opposition deems factual evidence as “fake news” and uses blatantly false fearmongering tactics, facts are not enough to win. We need every person to stand up for reproductive freedom and to demand that we stop the bans on abortion. We will continue the fight and will push back on any and all attacks on abortion access, here in the U.S. and around the world.
