May National Volunteer Call Recap

On May 20th, over 150 activists from around the country joined our National Volunteer Call to learn more about how they can take action in the #Fight4HER this summer. If you missed the call, make sure you check out the recording here.

Colin Chadwick, our #Fight4HER Pennsylvania Organizer, kicked off the call with an overview of the #Fight4HER campaign and all the progress we’ve made over the past three years. Our campaign, which is spread across eight states and nine cities, has mobilized over 54,000 people to take action to repeal the Global Gag Rule and has recruited thousands of volunteers.

We were joined on our National Volunteer Call by Congressman Ami Bera (D-CA-7) and our Director of Congressional Relations, Stacie Murphy, who talked about Trump’s Global Gag Rule and the Global HER Act that would end it permanently. During our discussion, Rep. Bera talked about why he supports the Global HER Act to repeal Trump’s Global Gag Rule, saying, “When thinking about empowering women and girls, you can’t do that globally unless you adequately allow women to have what is a fundamental human right, control over their body.”

Stacie talked about how the Global Gag Rule creates an ethical dilemma for organizations—they can either choose desperately-needed U.S. funding and limit the health services they provide, or they can provide the full range of reproductive health care to their patients and forfeit U.S. funding. Stacie emphasized that “you can’t talk about unsafe abortion if you can’t talk about safe abortion, since the two go hand in hand.”

Leigh Moyer, #Fight4HER Tucson Organizer, talked about how to build power to repeal the Global Gag Rule once and for all. She called on participants to register to vote, write letters to their senators asking them to cosponsor the Global HER Act, and get involved with us this summer to advance the #Fight4HER.

The summer kickoff call served as a platform to build our #Fight4HER community with activists all across the country. As our Summer of HER Fellows gear up to start next week, this call was a great opportunity to connect as a national team and learn about why the #Fight4HER is so important.

Sign up now to join our next National Volunteer Call, which will be June 17th at 1pm ET. This call will feature two reproductive health care experts from Kenya: #Fight4HER Advocate Melvine Ouyo and Stretcher’s Youth Organization Executive Director Dickson Okong’o. They will talk about the impacts of Trump’s Global Gag Rule in Kenya and what you can do to fight back against this devastating policy. We’re excited to continue the momentum generated in the first call, so make sure you sign up now!
