Week of Action to End the Global Gag Rule Keeps #Fight4HER Activists Busy

On June 22nd, we reunited with our #Fight4HER activists for a national volunteer call as part of our Week of Action to End the Global Gag Rule. We had the pleasure of hosting two speakers: Dickson Obonyo Okong’o and Caitlin Horrigan. Dickson is a peace advocate and the founder and current executive director of Stretchers Youth Organization in Kenya. Caitlin is the Global Advocacy Director at Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

We discussed the detrimental impact of the Global Gag Rule on local communities, the benefits of and barriers to passing the Global HER Act, and future trends and changes in international reproductive rights and services. Both speakers also mentioned how scarce resources and the confusing language used in applying the restrictive Global Gag Rule can leave providers misinformed about allowed services. While the expertise of both speakers overlaps, their unique perspectives helped build a more comprehensive understanding of the domestic and international impact. Dickson concentrated on the specific political and social atmosphere of reproductive rights and services in Kenya, whereas Caitlin touched upon the political process and significance of the Global HER Acts in the United States.

The Q&A session was very engaging and welcoming. I personally appreciated everyone’s active participation in the chat. I was very moved by one response Caitlin gave when asked if the Global HER Act can actually permanently stop rules like the Global Gag Rule. She eloquently stated, “Once you’ve given people rights, and once we’ve seen what the world looks like with those rights, it is really hard to claw them back.” The power and hope behind those rights are what the Global HER Act strives to achieve.

If you couldn’t make it to our national volunteer call, you can view the recording below, and you can take the following three actions to contribute to the fight for reproductive health and rights around the world:

  1. Take a moment to call your members of Congress using this link and remind them how important it is that they fiercely advocate for reproductive rights and health by supporting the Global HER Act.
  2. Sign our #Fight4HER petition to tell your legislators to co-sponsor the Global HER Act, and share the petition with at least five friends in your personal network.
  3. Follow us on social media and share our posts with your personal networks!
