Population Connection Action Fund, the political arm of Population Connection and America’s population movement, announced today its endorsement of Ami Bera (D-CA) for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Bera, a solid women’s health advocate, earned a 100 percent score on the Action Fund’s 2015-2016 Congressional Report Card.
“Population Connection Action Fund is proud to endorse Ami Bera for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives,” said John Seager, president of Population Connection Action Fund. “Rep. Bera is a fierce champion for women’s reproductive health care and an outspoken critic of governmental interference in personal medical decisions.”
As a key member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Bera has been a steadfast defender of efforts to expand access to affordable contraceptives and reproductive health services to women in the developing world – including, most recently, women affected by the outbreak of Zika in Latin America.
Having been a practicing physician for many years before entering the political arena, Rep. Bera understands the importance of protecting women’s reproductive rights – and his voting record stands as proof. He voted against a harmful bill, which would have banned abortion after 20 weeks, and against an amendment to the FY2014 continuing resolution H.J. Res. 49 that was designed to take away preventive health services from millions of women. Rep. Bera has also co-sponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act which made several limitations for access to safe abortions unlawful.
“Congressman Bera gives voice to the girls and women around the world struggling to choose their own destinies. We are excited, and proud, to stand with him and to help return him for another term in the House,” Seager said.
