Population Connection Action Fund, the political arm of Population Connection and America’s population movement, announced today its endorsement of Chuck Schumer for reelection to the United States Senate from New York. Senator Schumer, an outspoken hero for women’s rights, earned a 100 percent score on the Action Fund’s 2015-2016 Congressional Report Card.
“Population Connection Action Fund is proud to endorse a candidate who has fought for women’s reproductive rights both in the United States Congress and Senate,” said John Seager, President and CEO of Population Connection Action Fund. “Senator Schumer has used his positions to defend the rights and health of woman against legislative attacks and worked hard to expand women’s access to full care.”
Sen. Schumer who will be running against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, has a consistent record of standing for choice. He has supported U.S. aid for international family planning planning and voted for continued funding for Planned Parenthood. He has also authored Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act which successfully decreased violence against and harassment of health-care providers and patients. He also co-sponsored bills to expand contraceptive services for low-income women and provide emergency contraceptives at military bases. In addition to fighting every limitation placed on access to safe abortions, Sen. Schumer worked to increase services that prevent unintended pregnancies and sex education.
“There is a movement afoot in this country…that when it comes to rights of women, they want to go back to the 1950’s when women were denied access to safe, affordable, and live-saving reproductive health services. Well, we are not going to let them turn the clock back. We are going to move forward,” Sen. Schumer has stated.
