Population Connection Action Fund, the political arm of Population Connection and America’s population movement, announced today its endorsement of Eliot Engel (D-NY) for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Engel, an advocate for women’s rights worldwide, earned a 100 percent score on the Action Fund’s 2015-2016 Congressional Report Card.
“Population Connection Action Fund is proud to endorse Eliot Engel for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives,” said John Seager, president of Population Connection Action Fund.
As the Ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Engel has helped lead the effort to ensure that women around the world have access to safe, affordable and effective contraceptives and reproductive health care. Most recently he has urged that reproductive health be made available to women affected by the outbreak of Zika in Latin America. He has He has voted for continued funding for United Nations Population Fund. He has also been outspoken on the need to reinterpret Helms Amendment to allow U.S. funding for abortion services abroad in the case of rape, incest or life-threatening circumstance for women.
“In many countries around the world, and particularly those engaged in conflict or crisis, gender-based violence and rape affect women and girls with heartbreaking frequency. By ensuring that those who seek abortions have access to safe services, the U.S. could help ease their burdens. Yet the Helms Amendment forces these women and girls, who have already endured so much, to further risk their health and well-being,” he recently wrote in a Huffington Post blog.
“Rep. Engel has consistently stood up to protect women’s health and rights around the world, we are proud to stand with him,” added Seager.
