Population Connection Action Fund’s senior vice president for media and government relations, Brian Dixon, issued the following statement on the one year anniversary of President Trump’s executive action to enforce the Global Gag Rule:
“When Donald Trump imposed his Global Gag Rule, we called it a policy that was both cruel and stupid.
One year later, we stand by that description.
As predicted, the Global Gag Rule is shuttering health clinics throughout the developing world, leaving vulnerable people with nowhere to turn. It is causing contraceptive shortages in struggling communities. And it is undermining people’s efforts to build better lives for themselves and their families.
We’ve seen the harm that cutting off access to affordable reproductive healthcare causes. The evidence is everywhere: in Colombia and Kenya, in Nepal and Jordan. In countries all across the world, Trump’s Global Gag Rule is doing real damage to public health, human rights, and economic opportunity. It is creating problems, not solving them.
And it is putting the United States on the side of oppression, not freedom.
All this is why we’re committed to the fight for health, empowerment, and rights. We’re committed to the #Fight4HER. And we’re asking Congress to pass the Global HER Act to end Trump’s disgraceful Global Gag Rule.
And, in the words of the new governor of Virginia, Ralph Northam, ‘If we can’t change their minds, well then, we’ll change their seats.’”
#Fight4HER is a grassroots campaign of Population Connection Action Fund to defend reproductive rights around the world. We demand increased access to international family planning programs to ensure that every woman and girl can make her own healthcare decisions without exceptions.
