Population Connection Action Fund announced that it has endorsed Jeff Merkley for re-election to the United States Senate.
Brian Dixon, Sr. Vice President at Population Connection Action Fund, said, “Jeff Merkley is one of the strongest champions for reproductive health and rights in the United States Senate. He understands that reproductive freedom is essential to a woman’s health, autonomy, and economic security. And that investments in these programs bring enormous returns to families and communities.”
There are at least 214 million women in the developing world who want to prevent or delay pregnancy, but have an unmet need for contraceptives. Unsafe abortion remains a serious public health challenge in many countries. Investment in reproductive health and family planning programs is crucial to building healthier families, communities, and countries.
Sen. Merkley said:
Trump’s war on women is not just being waged here in America, he’s also attacking women across the globe. Trump’s disastrous decision to reinstate the Global Gag Rule harms millions of people by preventing them from accessing reproductive health care services. We need to increase access to health care, not put obstacles in place. That’s why it’s critical we have organizations like Population Connection Action Fund fighting back against these efforts in Congress. I am proud to stand side by side with Population Connection Action Fund in the fight to repeal the Global Gag Rule and ensure that women across the world have access to the health care services they need.
“Jeff Merkley has always stood up and fought for the health, empowerment, and rights of people everywhere. We are proud to stand with him in his campaign for re-election to the U.S. Senate,” Dixon added.
