Population Connection Action Fund announced that it has endorsed Leslie Cockburn in the race for Congress in Virginia’s 5th District.
Brian Dixon, the Sr. Vice President at Population Connection Action Fund, said, “Leslie Cockburn’s distinguished career as a journalist has given her an understanding of people that few in Congress can match. That understanding and her commitment to making life better for everyone make her the right choice in this election.”
The Republican majority in Congress has pursued policies that make life harder and more dangerous for vulnerable people everywhere. The Global Gag Rule is shuttering health clinics in the poorest parts of the world and forcing doctors to deny care to some in order to provide it to others. The refusal to release aid to the United Nations Population Fund is denying crucial maternal and reproductive health care to people in desperate circumstances. The ongoing efforts to undermine affordable health coverage and the attacks on Planned Parenthood threaten to deny millions of Americans the health care they need.
Cockburn says, “Access to family planning is important to ensure economic equality, protect autonomy, and expand opportunity. It is about having the freedom to make family planning decisions without government interference. Families everywhere deserve the power to make their own decisions about whether, when and with whom to have children, but the Trump Administration and Republican Congress are imposing policies to limit access. That needs to change, and I’ll fight to get the government out of people’s family decisions.”
Dixon added, “It’s time for Congress to stand up for the rights of all people to choose their own futures. Leslie Cockburn has made clear that she will stand up and fight for health, empowerment and rights for people everywhere. We are proud to stand with her.
