Population Connection Action Fund, the political arm of Population Connection and America’s population movement, announced today its endorsement of Nita Lowey (D-NY) for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Lowey, an advocate for women worldwide, earned a 100 percent score on the Action Fund’s 2015-2016 Congressional Report Card.
“Population Connection Action Fund is proud to endorse Nita Lowey for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives,” said John Seager, president of Population Connection Action Fund. “Rep. Lowey has stood up to protect women’s health at every turn, and for that we support her.”
As the Ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Lowey has spoken out against and helped lead the fight in opposition to the Republican majority’s proposals to slash funding for and impose onerous restrictions on family planning programs around the world. She has been the lead sponsor of legislation to prevent the future imposition of the Global Gag Rule – a policy that disqualifies the most experienced, effective and respected providers of reproductive health care in the developing world from receiving U.S. assistance. She successfully led the fight in the House to ensure coverage for safe abortion for Peace Corps volunteers who are pregnant because of rape or whose lives are threatened by continuing a pregnancy. She has also sponsored a bill to expand contraceptives access among low-income women and co-sponsored a bill to ensure survivors of rape have access to emergency contraceptives.
“For literally millions of girls and women seeking equality and full participation in their communities and countries, Congresswoman Lowey has been an indispensable champion,” added Seager, “and for that, and for her indefatigable leadership, we are proud to stand with her in her campaign for another term in Congress.”
