Population Connection Action Fund, the political arm of Population Connection and America’s population movement, announced today its endorsement of Patrick Leahy for reelection to the United States Senate from Vermont. Senator Leahy, an adamant advocate for women’s reproductive health and rights, earned a 100 percent score on the Action Fund’s 2015-2016 Congressional Report Card.
“Population Connection Action Fund is proud to endorse a candidate who has voted and worked for improved access to reproductive health for reelection to the United States Senate,” said John Seager, president and CEO of Population Connection Action Fund. “As both chairman and ranking member of the key Appropriations Subcommittee on State Department and Foreign Operations, Leahy has been a critical leader in ensuring that women around world have access to affordable contraceptives and reproductive health care. By standing up against efforts to eliminate support for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), to reinstate the counterproductive and dangerous Global Gag Rule, Leahy has helped ensure that literally hundreds of millions of women can get the services they need.”
Senator Leahy has supported and cosponsored many bills to protect women’s reproductive rights, including Freedom of Choice Act. He has supported public funding for Planned Parenthood and increased sex education and has been an outspoken advocate for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence and trafficking. In 2013, Senator Leahy championed the passage of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act.
“Senator Leahy has long stood up for some of the most marginalized people in the world and we’re proud to stand up for him,” added Seager.
