Population Connection Action Fund announced that it has endorsed Jennifer Wexton for U.S. Congress from Virginia’s 10th District.
Brian Dixon, the Sr. Vice President at Population Connection Action Fund, said, “Sen. Wexton has been a strong and outspoken leader in Richmond. She has been a champion for gender equity, human rights and reproductive freedom. She led the fight for equal pay, sponsored legislation to ensure that young people received evidence based sex education and fought against seemingly relentless efforts to restrict access to comprehensive reproductive health care. That is the kind of leadership and commitment we need in Congress.”
The incumbent, Rep. Barbara Comstock has been a consistent enabler Donald Trump’s agenda of casual cruelty. She supported the imposition of the disgraceful Global Gag Rule, cutting off access to critical health care to people throughout the developing world. She has joined in as Trump has tried to strip care from the millions of Americans who rely on Planned Parenthood clinics. She stood with Trump as he eliminated aid to UNFPA – an agency providing access to birth control and other important services to struggling families in 150 countries, including providing maternal health care to Syrian refugees in Jordan.
Senator Wexton says, “Reproductive freedom is economic freedom. That’s as true in less developed countries as it is in Northern Virginia. I am committed to fighting to repeal Trump’s disgraceful Global Gag Rule that’s undermining reproductive health care around the world, restoring U.S. leadership in global health and opposing any new efforts to undermine these services at home or abroad”
Dixon added, “It is time for Congress to stand up to this shortsighted, misguided cruelty. It is time for Congress to stand up for the victims of human rights violations, not the violators. It is time for Congress to stand up for the rights of all people to choose their own futures. Jennifer Wexton has made clear that she will stand up and fight for health, empowerment and rights for people everywhere. We are proud to stand with her.
