Population Connection Action Fund announced that it has endorsed Xochitl Torres Small for Congress from New Mexico’s 2nd District.

Brian Dixon, the Sr. Vice President at Population Connection Action Fund, said, “Xochitl Torres Small has demonstrated the commitment and compassion to be an effective leader in Congress. She is fighting for affordable and accessible health care for people throughout New Mexico and around the world. She has made clear that she will be a voice for the vulnerable people who are being threatened by the policies of Congressional Republicans.”

Her opponent, though, has made it clear that she will be a participant in Congressional Republicans agenda of cruelty. She will support rather than fight the imposition of the disgraceful Global Gag Rule, cutting off access to critical health care to people throughout the developing world. She will offer support for the domestic gag rule designed to shutter Planned Parenthood clinics and undermine access to reproductive health care and contraceptives. She will cheer, rather than challenge, the elimination of aid to UNFPA – an agency providing access to birth control and other important services to struggling families in 150 countries, including providing maternal health care to Syrian refugees in Jordan.

Torres Small says, “As I have traveled southern New Mexico, I have continually heard from voters about their struggles to get the health care they need where they live. Here, like the rest of the world, access to reproductive health care is vital for healthy children, families, and our future. I’m proud to stand with Population Connection Action Fund to make sure we all can get the health care we need.”

Dixon added, “It is time for Congress to stand up to this shortsighted, misguided cruelty. It’s time for Congress to fight to make affordable health care available to more people, not fewer. It’s time for Congress to stand up for the victims of human rights violations, not the violators. It’s time for Congress to stand up for the rights of all people to choose their own futures. Xochitl Torres Small has made clear that she will stand up and fight for health, empowerment and rights for people everywhere. And we are proud to stand with her.”
