Kavanaugh puts access to safe abortion at risk

Population Connection Action Fund’s senior vice president for media and government relations, Brian Dixon, issued the following statement in response to Trump’s Supreme Court nominee:

“Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, a critic of abortion rights and access to contraception, to the Supreme Court sends a menacing message about reproductive rights for women and people everywhere.

In a high-profile case in 2017, Kavanaugh agreed that the Trump administration could detain a teenager to prevent her from getting an abortion, helping to delay her procedure into the second trimester, and in 2015, he decided that a boss’s “morality” took precedence over a worker’s need for birth control.

Trump has explicitly promised to appoint anti-choice justices like Neil Gorsuch and now Kavanaugh who would overturn Roe v. Wade and put access to safe and legal abortion at risk, and Kavanaugh’s refusal to answer whether the landmark ruling was correctly decided indicates he would vote to do exactly that.

Trump was elected under dubious circumstances, getting three million fewer votes than his opponent while receiving assistance from Russian hackers. He’s under investigation even as he nominates a judge who claims that a president should be immune from indictment. Kavanaugh seems to embody Trump’s philosophy perfectly: he believes that rich men are above the law while women and girls lack bodily and moral autonomy. This, like so much of Trump’s actions, is disgraceful.

We cannot stand by as Donald Trump tries to undergird his own power and undermine the rights of Americans and the lives of people everywhere. Now more than ever, we need to fight back and demand our elected officials stand up to Trump and reject this extreme nominee. Lives depend on it.”
