Donald Trump’s nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court seat once held by Antonin Scalia and held open by unprecedented obstructionism by Senate Republicans in ridiculous prime time spectacle is both embarrassing and terrifying.
Embarrassing because Trump continues to treat the serious job of governing as a reality show. Terrifying because Gorsuch is an extremist who seeks to undermine individual freedom. Judge Gorsuch has a history of rulings far outside the mainstream. He has prioritized corporations over workers and demonstrated clear opposition to reproductive rights.
Donald Trump explicitly promised to appoint justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade, and there’s every reason to believe Neil Gorsuch would vote to do exactly that. He has written that it’s reasonable to consider the use of birth control as “wrongful conduct.” His extreme views make him a danger to the rights and freedoms of every woman in America.
Donald Trump was elected president under incredibly shady circumstances. He got 3 million fewer votes than his main opponent while receiving assistance from Russian hackers. And instead of acting in a way to address the concerns of the majority of Americans who voted against him, and instead of calling for a real investigation into Russia’s role in this election, he’s pursuing a divisive, far-right, pro-corporate agenda that was overwhelmingly rejected at the polls. We call on the Senate to reject this extreme nominee and demand that Trump re-nominate Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court.
