Statement on the Senate Appropriations Committee Decision to Overturn the Global Gag Rule

For Immediate Release: September 7, 2017

Population Connection Action Fund applauds the Senate Appropriations Committee for today’s decision to overturn Trump’s cruel and dangerous Global Gag Rule expansion and to allocate money for the United Nations Population Fund.

Trump’s Global Gag Rule is a devastating assault on defenseless people across the world – particularly women and girls. It forces healthcare professionals not to tell patients about reproductive health choices, or risk losing up to $8.8 billion in global health funding. By reducing access to reproductive healthcare, the Global Gag Rule closes clinics, restricts contraception, and causes unsafe abortion rates to skyrocket. In short, it kills people.

By voting to overturn the Global Gag Rule, the Senate Appropriations Committee is sending a strong message that the lives of the girls, women, and families who rely on reproductive healthcare matter here and abroad. We are grateful to Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) for her steadfast leadership and staunch opposition to the Global Gag Rule. She led a bipartisan group of legislators to the only logical conclusion on this issue; we must protect the most vulnerable among us.
