Trump's Cronies in Congress Pass His Cruel and Consequential Bill

Today, House Republicans passed H.R.1, Donald Trump’s deeply unpopular tax and spending bill, with the support of all but two Republicans in the chamber. The bill now heads to Trump, who will be celebrating the supposed freedom of the Fourth of July by signing into law a bill that will wreak havoc on the health and lives of millions of Americans. To say this bill is awful is an understatement—it is cruel and dangerous and deadly.

On top of slashing Medicaid across the board, Trump and his Republican cronies reached their longstanding goal of defunding Planned Parenthood, which will cause millions to go without critical reproductive health care—including abortion, STI testing, contraception, and cancer screenings—and threatens the closure of family planning clinics across the country.

Population Connection Action Fund President and CEO John Seager shared the following:

“This terrible legislation reminds us that elections matter. If just 3,655 voters in three congressional districts had voted instead for Democratic congressional candidates, we would have elected a U.S. House of Representatives led by champions of reproductive rights and of the environment. The margins couldn’t be closer. And the stakes couldn’t be higher as we move toward the next set of national elections.”

Every Republican in the House who voted for this bill betrayed their constituents today. They should feel the shame of this vote every day until the next election, and every day after.
