Statement on Supreme Court Decision Gutting Climate Protection

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Today’s decision by the Supreme Court in West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency is disgraceful.

Once again, a partisan majority of justices showed contempt for the citizens they’re supposed to protect. Once again, they threw their full weight behind the powerful at the expense of everyone else. Once again, they put Americans’ health at risk so that some corporate titans could become even richer while making the rest of us sicker. Once again, they put base partisan interests ahead of people’s lives.

The current majority of the Court has made clear again that they are nothing but partisan political operatives working to advance the political interests of their patrons.

Following on the heels of last week’s decision stripping Americans of their fundamental right to bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom, this Supreme Court majority has shown time and time again that they have nothing but contempt for human rights, public health, or basic decency.

That this is being done by a majority appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote is infuriating. That three of them were installed by a president who lost the popular vote, was impeached twice, and incited a violent insurrection to hold on to power is grotesque.

It is crucial that Congress act swiftly to increase the number of Supreme Court justices to restore legitimacy and decency to the bench.
